Room Sketcher

reviewed by Marlou Bleijenberg

The Good:

The website does not require any installation and works with flash player on any browser. It is not too complicated to use, and you don't need to pay for anything to sketch with (like downloads for extra furniture options). You can start sketching from scratch or work in the template that is already present on the homepage of the website, already furnished and designed, so you can play around with it in the existing room.

The Bad:

However there are lots of options in furniture and interior, it is still limited in colors, patterns and products. If you really want to use this tool to recreate/decorate your own room you'll need products that matches your stuff or where you can upload patterns you like. Also, there is an option to view the room in 3D but it's only available for premium accounts. Uploading own patterns is also only possible when you upgrade your account. Also, it would make it a bit more clear if the furniture section has sub categories like couches, seats, beds etcetera.

The Bottomline:

This program has a great selection and variety in furniture options for designing a space. Measurements are very precise and you can view the space from different angles when you buy the upgrade account. Without the upgrade, this program still offers lots of options to work with.

What would/could a designer use this tool for?

NB: Think not only of the things the tool is meant for, but imagine in what other ways a designer might be able to play with, and appropriate this tool. The tool could be useful for interior design because it gives a very precise view of the space and products, or for product design. I think it could also be applied in graphic design if you're looking for things like how objects function in a room with a certain light, colors or patterns.

Depending on what kind of free this tool is, how “free” is this tool really?

For instance – you don’t have to pay for it, but it’s keeping track of your surf behaviour, and pushing advertising towards you, is it then free
